Finally, the era of the horse pit is over! Update 3 has officially dropped, and it brings the feature the community has been begging for since the first trailers: Animal Taming.
Whether you're tired of your horse sprinting for the horizon the second you dismount or you're looking to start a sustainable farmstead in the Emerald Grove, the new interaction system allows you to surround yourself with adorable fluffy critters. Here is how to make some animal friends in Orbis and live out your Disney princess dreams.

1. The Interaction System: How to Tame
Hytale's taming is not about random luck or standing still for ten minutes. To tame an animal, feed them their favorite treat!
- Identify the Need: Approach any passive tameable animal and press F. Watch out! Some animals might run away or try to kick you as you chase them!
- The Thought Bubble: A small icon will appear above the animal's head showing exactly which food item they are craving.
- Feeding: Hold that item in your hand and press F again. You’ll see heart particles, and the animal will stop running away from you.

2. The Orbis Diet: Taming Requirements
While horses are the main attraction, several other livestock and wild animals are now tameable. If you're short on supplies, head to a Kweebec Village - their communal gardens are the best place to source these veggies early on if you can't farm them yourself yet.
🍎 Animal Taming Requirements
Hytale Update 3 Food Preferences
| Animal | Required Food |
|---|---|
| Horse / Bunny | Carrots |
| Sheep / Cow | Lettuce |
| Goat | Apples |
| Chicken | Corn |
| Boar | Pumpkins |
| Pig | Radishes |
| Mosshorn | Yellow Moss Block? |
Update 3 Note: Tamed animals will no longer wander off or flee when dismounted. However, they also don't follow the player. They effectively become "parked" until you interact with them again.

3. The Mosshorn Mystery Solved
You might have noticed the Mosshorn asking for a strange "yellow sponge" looking block. This is actually a Yellow Moss Block.
- Where to find it: You can harvest these directly from the swampier sections of Zone 1 (Emerald Grove).
- Crafting it: If you can't find them in the wild, you can craft them at a Farmer's Workbench (Tier 1) using 4x Yellow Moss and 2x Plant Fiber.

Mobility for the Open World
Before this update, keeping a horse was a tactical nightmare. Because they weren't technically "owned," they would immediately ride off into the horizon whenever you dismount, often wander into danger or despawn if you left them alone for too long. This led to the "pit trap" meta, where players had to dig ridiculous holes in the ground just to park their horse while they went into a dungeon.
Now, your horse is actually yours. This opens up the world for much faster exploration, especially in Zone 2, without the constant stress of losing your ride.
